Compass

A compass is an instrument used for navigation and orientation that shows direction relative to the geographic cardinal directions (or points). Usually, a diagram called a compass rose shows the directions north, south, east, and west on the compass face as abbreviated initials. When the compass is used, the rose can be aligned with the corresponding geographic directions; for example, the N mark on the rose points northward.

A compass works by detecting Earth's magnetic field. The Earth has a magnetic field that is generated by its core. The magnetic field is what causes a compass to point north. The needle of a compass is magnetized and will align itself with Earth's magnetic field.

The first compasses were made of lodestone, a naturally magnetized stone of iron, in Han dynasty China (20 BC – 20 AD). The compass was later used for navigation during the Song Dynasty of the 11th century.

Compasses are still widely used today for navigation and orientation purposes. They are used by hikers, campers, sailors, pilots, and many others who need to find their way around.
